At Make The Change, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to not only navigate the digital world safely, but to also shape it positively.
Recently, we had the privilege of partnering with Children Wishing Well to deliver a 3-session Cyber Wellness and Videography programme for children from marginalised backgrounds. What unfolded over these sessions was more than just learning, it was transformation.
From Consumers to Creators
Many of the students came in as everyday users of digital content, watching videos, scrolling through platforms, and reacting to what they see online.
By the end of the programme, they had taken on a new role: content creators with purpose.
Through hands-on activities using iPads, students explored how videos are made, how messages are shaped, and most importantly, how media can influence thoughts and emotions.
Understanding the Digital World
In the first session, students were introduced to the foundations of cyber wellness.
They learned that:
Not everything online is true
Videos are designed to capture attention
It is important to think before sharing
Through interactive games and discussions, students began to question what they see online, developing the first steps towards critical thinking.
Becoming Media Detectives
In the second session, students explored how videos influence people.
They discovered how:
Camera angles can change perception
Music can shape emotions
Storytelling can highlight or hide information
By analysing different types of videos, students became more aware of how media is constructed. They were no longer just watching, they were thinking.
Creating with Purpose
The final session brought everything together.
Working in small groups, students planned, filmed, and edited their own short videos promoting cyber wellness messages such as:
“Think Before You Share”
“Be Kind Online”
“Not Everything Online Is True”
Using simple storytelling structures, each group created a video that included:
A situation
A decision
A message
The results were thoughtful, creative, and deeply meaningful.
Building Confidence and Collaboration
Beyond technical skills, the programme created space for students to:
Express their ideas and voices
Work collaboratively in teams
Build confidence in sharing their perspectives
For many, this was their first time creating and presenting a video. Seeing their ideas come to life was a powerful moment.
More Than Digital Skills
This programme was not just about learning how to use technology.
It was about helping students understand that:
Their choices online matter
Their voices are important
They can use media to make a positive impact
A Step Towards a Safer Digital Future
At Make The Change, we are committed to equipping young people with the skills, mindset, and confidence to thrive in the digital world.
Programmes like this remind us that when given the right tools and guidance, young people do not just adapt to the future, they help shape it.
If you are interested in bringing similar programmes to your school or organisation, we would love to connect.
Together, we can empower the next generation of responsible digital citizens and changemakers.
