AI for Good: Empowering Woodgrove Secondary Students to Create a More Sustainable Future
Updated: 7 hours ago

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we learn, create and solve problems. Beyond understanding how AI works, how can we inspire young people to use this technology to make a positive difference?
At Make The Change, we believe the next generation should not only be confident users of technology, but also responsible creators and changemakers. This belief came to life during our two-day Introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme at Woodgrove Secondary School, where Secondary 2 students explored AI through interactive learning, creative experimentation and real-world sustainability challenges.
Building the Foundations of Responsible AI
Students explored how AI systems learn from data, how bias can influence responses and why critical thinking remains essential. They learned about deepfakes, digital privacy and the importance of verifying AI-generated information.
A key focus was prompt engineering: discovering how clearer questions and more specific instructions can improve AI responses. Students also practised the SURE (Source, Understand, Research, Evaluate) and 3A (Attempt, Appraise, Adapt) frameworks for evaluating information and refining their ideas.
AI is a powerful tool, but human creativity, judgement and responsibility remain essential.
From Learning About AI to Creating Solutions
Students applied their new AI knowledge to sustainability challenges connected to their school, community and everyday lives. Their areas of exploration included reducing food waste, improving recycling habits, reducing single-use plastics, conserving water and electricity, and encouraging more sustainable choices.
Working in teams, students investigated problems, identified people affected, brainstormed ideas and explored how AI could support their solutions. They developed creative AI-assisted projects including chatbot prototypes, digital presentations, posters and other concepts aimed at encouraging sustainable behaviours.
Rather than simply accepting AI-generated answers, students were encouraged to test their ideas, recognise limitations and consider the role of human oversight.
Creativity, Collaboration and Changemaker Skills in Action
The programme created opportunities to practise communication, creative thinking, collaboration and problem-solving. Students learned to approach challenges from different perspectives, evaluate information and improve their ideas through experimentation.
By connecting technology with sustainability, they explored what it means to be an AI Changemaker: someone who uses emerging technologies thoughtfully and creatively to contribute to positive change.
Meaningful Learning and Encouraging Student Feedback
We were delighted to see students collaborating, exploring new tools and putting their learning into practice. Across the programme, 314 feedback responses were collected, providing insights into what students found meaningful.
Student reflections highlighted prompt engineering, practical AI applications, responsible AI use, sustainability, creativity and collaboration. These learning outcomes reinforce the value of giving students opportunities to experiment with emerging technologies and create real-world solutions.
One student described the experience as a ‘Very fun lesson today.’
Inspiring the Next Generation of AI Changemakers
At Make The Change, AI education goes beyond teaching students the latest tools. It should empower them to ask meaningful questions, make responsible decisions and discover how technology can contribute to a better world.
How can we use AI not just to make things easier, but to make things better?
Thank You, Woodgrove Secondary School!
