  • Internship Experience - Middleton International School

In January 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting a student from Middleton International School for a two-week internship at Make The Change. Though brief, his time with us was rich in experience, leaving an impression not only on our team but also on his own understanding of social innovation and education. Making Sense of Data: From Numbers to Insights One of the key highlights of his internship was his deep dive into data analysis. Tasked with interpreting both qualitative and quantitative data from the Young Changemaker Programme, he demonstrated a thoughtful approach in drawing meaning from the responses. His final output, an infographic, was not just visually appealing but also effectively communicated the programme's impact. A Pen for Purpose As part of his exposure to communications, he also dabbled in article writing. Through this, he explored how storytelling and language can shape narratives around social causes and amplify meaningful work. Voice for Change In line with our New Media Programme, he also explored audio content creation. Using GarageBand on the iPad, he produced a mock audio, experimenting with voice, scripting, and editing—learning how media can be a powerful platform to inform and inspire. A Meaningful Takeaway Reflecting on his experience, he shared: “Most importantly, the internship deepened my understanding of the profound impact that education and creative initiatives can have on fostering positive societal change.” His journey reminds us that even short-term internships can spark long-term growth when learners are given space to explore, reflect, and create. We’re grateful to have played a small part in his learning journey and look forward to continuing to empower more young minds in the remaining months of 2025!

  • Thriving Transitions Workshop at Bartley Secondary School

The jump from primary school to secondary school can be both exciting and overwhelming. To help ease this transition, Make The Change hosted a 3.5-hour workshop for the Secondary 1 students at Bartley Secondary School , designed to equip them with skills to navigate challenges of this pivotal change. The workshop, Thriving Through Transitions , was focused on fostering self-awareness, emotional resilience, and support networks between students; aspects that are essential for a holistic student experience. Three Key Segments: I Am, I Can, I Have The session was divided into the following three key segments— I Am, I Can, and I Have —each one designed to address different facets of holistic student development. "I Am"  encouraged students to explore their emotions and understand their responses to new situations. Scenarios such as missing old friends or meeting new classmates were discussed to help them build self-awareness and confidence. "I Can"  focused on equipping students with strategies to manage emotions and take proactive steps in challenging situations. Techniques such as emotional mapping and recognizing emotional triggers were introduced. "I Have"  highlighted the importance of building a strong support network, encouraging students to identify individuals they can rely on for guidance and support. Bringing Lessons to Life Through Interactive Activities To ensure these lessons resonated, each segment was paired with engaging, hands-on activities. Students participated in group discussions, journal writing, and emotional mapping exercises, helping them internalize key takeaways in a practical and relatable manner. A highlight of the session was a role-playing activity that simulated real-life scenarios, such as navigating a new school environment or resolving conflicts in group projects. This exercise not only reinforced decision-making and problem-solving skills but also served as an icebreaker, allowing students to introduce themselves to their new classmates in an organic and meaningful way. Students' Takeaways: Confidence, Connection, and Clarity The impact of the program was evident in student's feedback. Many appreciated the opportunity to share their thoughts and learn practical strategies for overcoming common challenges. Hear from the students themselves: “I now know how to handle my emotions better and ask for help when I need it.”  "The activities helped me feel more confident about meeting new people.” Students left feeling more prepared, reassured, and empowered to navigate the ups and downs of secondary school life. A Step Towards a Supportive School Culture Looking ahead, the thriving transitions workshop was without a doubt a resounding success, contributing significantly to the holistic development of Secondary 1 students. By addressing emotional resilience, self-awareness, and the importance of support systems, the workshop equipped students with the tools to thrive in their new environment. Embrace the journey, seek support, and take each challenge as an opportunity to grow. We look forward to organizing more initiatives in the future that empower the young changemakers to create a nurturing space for growth. • Design For Good’s journey to achieving Sustainable Design

What essentially is design for good? With the new paradigm shift for design as a whole, we have seen an increasing trend in sustainable design. It’s no longer just about the cost (economic impact) and quality but also, the societal and environmental impact the whole design process will bring. We have always believed in sustainable design - design that can bring about a positive impact. This was also one of the reasons why we started Design For Good. Design For Good (DFG) has been around since 2017, and after 3 years, it is time we relook at our past journey and the new possibilities we may have. While we anchor towards a greater change , let’s not forget the past, the people and the projects that have shaped us to who we are today. There is Krafters, our humble beginning where we worked with the villagers in Smile Village, Cambodia to come up with sustainable design products that they could make for their livelihood. As we progressed, there were also youth individuals, namely Xscape and Sondering Slate, who hopped on board to drive their respective social change through design and sales. These milestones have definitely played a big part and guided us in our new envision. As we grew from our experiences with the different communities, we started adopting the Asset-Based Community Development (A-B-C-D) model in the way we do our work. With that in mind, we developed the fundamentals of 3Ps; process, people & product and our 3 Ps can be categorized into the following: It is no longer about the profit or end results, it is now about the journey we take to and these 3 Ps serve as our backbone and reminder to push DFG to strive for constant quality and impactful result in the works we do. While we firmly believe in the fundamentals of the 3 Ps, there is an underlying driver to our fundamentals which is the A-B-C-D approach (Not to be confused with the A-B-C-D model). (A)ssess: The ability to analyse the social and environmental impacts of products and production and to evaluate organizational capacity to address them. Over the years, DFG have noticed a rise in environmental issues, yet, as more attention and actions are brought to it, we wondered: is it all just a hype ? Socially, the communities we’re working with; how can we empower them further with their assets and strengths to live a more purposeful and independent life? Similarly, as we assess the impact we aim to bring to the environment and the communities, we let down our ‘giver’s mindset’ and took a look at ourselves; what is our true purpose & capacity and what about our products’ resource & ecological footprints? As we factored in our own strengths and weaknesses, we had a clearer idea of our end goal in being a sustainable design brand. (B)ridge: The ability to connect ready parties and to bring the right functions and the right people together to redesign products. People play a critical role in any brand. Without good and effective people, a brand can only do so much. In DFG, we have multiple stakeholders and each and every individual is valued dearly. From our creative designers, to our hardworking and skillful producers and last but definitely not the least to our loyal customers. They make up our product performance which is ultimately measured in ways for example, quantitatively by the number of products sold or qualitatively by the improvement in standard of living of the villagers through working with DFG. Every individual has an important role to play in the whole branding and together, we can redesign to be a suitable design brand. (C)reate: The ability to generate projects that enable exploration and learning about product sustainability and about changes needed to the design process. ‘It’s the execution that matters, never the idea.’ quoted from Casey Neistat. So, coming up to our third official year of running, DFG has created a number of ‘pilot’ projects as mentioned above. These projects have given us better insights and directions for the new rebrand. We are evolving as we walked on the road of being a sustainable brand. (D)iffuse: The ability to deploy tools that build literacy, integrate learned design principles and build accountability across the design funnel. The final step, to become a more sustainable brand, we are constantly looking into how we can broaden our outreach and increase our revenue. While it is encouraged to have a specialisation, we believe in branching out and taking up multiple projects so that we can maximise both our impact and profit. These 3 years have been an enriching and fulfilling one for DFG. Together with the new year, we would like to welcome new changes. Armed with the mindset of the A-B-C-D model (Asset Based Community Development), fundamentals of our 3 Ps (Process, People, Product) and the A-B-C-D approach (Assess, Bridge, Create, Diffuse), DFG is ready to take on bigger and greater projects and we look forward to sharing our oncoming exciting journey with you!

Through learning courses, we upskill persons from vulnerable communities to improve their employability, while recommending socially responsible growth and developmental solutions to businesses and institutions. We also offer integrated creative solutions to Social Service Agencies supporting a myriad of causes. We are dedicated to walking the talk at Make The Change, and strive to build an inclusive society from inside out.  Within Make The Change At Make The Change, we believe that everyone is inherently capable of creativity. This includes persons with disabilities, refugees from Indonesia, and staff from regional countries such as Thailand. For staff with disabilities, we offer alternative work arrangements depending on their needs. These include flexible work hours and remote work. In cases such as our former graphic designer who is hearing-impaired, we sought ways to communicate with them such as using gestures and typing messages on a screen to ensure they felt included and could carry out their tasks effectively.  For refugees or staff who may need it, we offer training courses and close supervision to upskill and assist them, especially in the early days of their employment.  In order to ensure all staff feel a sense of belonging and have access to support within Make The Change, all staff are included in various WhatsApp groups for easy communication. Remote staff are also invited to office gatherings and bonding activities where possible, so they may meet and bond with their co-workers. Beyond Make The Change Make The Change strives to empower communities, and to help more organisations join the cause. As a Social Impact consultant, we raise awareness of the importance of uplifting vulnerable communities, and serve as a bridge to connect institutions and businesses with Social Service Agencies in need.  Another key service Make The Change provides is learning programmes. While these programmes are accessible to all members of the public, we offer scholarships and tailored experiences for those from marginalised communities, so they may gain access to a brighter future. We provide various upskilling courses  to persons with disabilities and refugees, and link them up to career opportunities upon completion. We also often partner with Social Service Agencies such as the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore to provide training courses and offer employment opportunities to their beneficiaries to improve their livelihoods. • Social Sustainability

Zayn Toghyan MTC Freelance Writer What is Social Sustainability? S ustainable development discussions often focus on the environmental or economic aspects of sustainability. As such, social sustainability is often an overlooked aspect of sustainability. All three dimensions of sustainability must be addressed to attain the most sustainable outcome possible. Social sustainability o ccurs when the formal and informal processes; systems, structures, and relationships actively support the capacity of current and future generations, creating healthy and liveable communities. Socially sustainable communities are equitable, diverse, connected, democratic and provide good quality of life. Social sustainability is a process which creates successful sustainable places that promote wellbeing. This can be achieved through understanding what people need from the places they live and work. Social sustainability combines design of the physical realm with design of the social world, infrastructure to support social and cultural life, social amenities, systems for citizen engagement, and space for people and places to evolve. It is the ability of a community to develop processes and structures which not only meet the needs of its current members, but also support the ability of future generations to maintain a healthy community. Social Sustainability in Business Companies that raise the importance of social sustainability recognise the significance of their relationships with people, communities and society. Social responsibility becomes part of their core business strategy and they consider how their activities affect people. Inevitably, there is always a human cost to doing business. A socially sustainable business will consider the safety of its workers in a particular location. It will not allow its workers’ safety to be compromised by forcing them to work in a building that has been deemed unsafe. Providing safer working conditions, living wages and job security creates a more secure supply chain. According to the UN Global Compact, aiming for social sustainability can help businesses in a number of ways: Unlocking new markets Helping retain and attract business partners Becoming the source of innovation for new product or service lines Raising internal morale and employee engagement Improving risk management Improving company-community conflicts Will Social Sustainability Improve Employment Opportunities? Social sustainability is a worthy business investment. When workers are paid fairly ,work under safe working conditions, and their well being is taken care of, they will be more productive. Healthy and productive workers then translate to more profits for companies. Furthermore, socially sustainable companies enjoy greater consumer patronage, as consumers tend to support businesses that treat their workers fairly. The UN Global Compact regards human rights as the cornerstone of social sustainability. This extends to areas such as human rights for these specific groups; Human rights Labour and Decent Work Gender equality Children Indigenous peoples Education Resources: https://www.sustainabilitydegrees.com/ https://www.adecesg.com/resources/faq/what-is-social-sustainability/#:~:text=Social%20sustainability%20is%20a%20process,places%20they%20live%20and%20work .

  • 5 Ways Social Media Enhances Digital Fundraising

There is no world more connected than the digital world, and no tool more powerful in spreading information quickly than digital media. Here are some best practices that you can consider for your digital fundraiser, and tips that a good digital agency would be able to recommend and execute: Digital Marketing As A Powerful Tool Content Is King Interactivity Through Social Media Optimising Your Website Show Appreciation To Your Donors 1. Digital Marketing As A Powerful Tool How so? In a time such as now where a “new normal” is prevalent thanks to COVID19, many campaigns have been forced to be cancelled or postponed. However, there is a silver lining with Digital Marketing . With an estimated 3.6 billion people using social media worldwide as of 2020, content that is visually engaging AND easily shareable are two key attributes for a successful digital fundraising campaign. NGOs and SMEs can reach out to their target audience at any time and any place, so long as you are digitally connected through your phone or laptop. Gone are the days you would need physical billboards, hold roadshows, or print ads to make your campaign/products known. There is no better time than now to harness the power of Digital Marketing and integrate it into your overall fundraising strategy - and we will show you how in the rest of the pointers below. 2. Content Is King Provide a strong hook that would capture your audience’s 3-second attention span. Pick an angle that would induce curiosity or strong human emotion. Share heartwarming stories through photos and videos that would tug on heartstrings, and showcase how your organisation is truly making a difference to these beneficiaries. This will garner more attention to your content. Your audience will want to learn more, hence increasing reactions, likes, and shares. Experiment with the content, be it animated GIFs, illustrations, or images of real people, and see which ones resonate best (from our experience, content that shows real human faces usually gets better impressions). Also remember to leave a single clear call-to-action messaging to let donors know exactly what they have to do to support the cause. This would usually be a one-click redirection to a website where they can easily make the donation. 3. Interactivity Through Social Media While social media has been criticised for decreasing in-person interactions, this does not have to be the case for your digital fundraiser. People love being included - especially if it’s for a good cause. Even during a global pandemic where live events and gatherings have ceased, you can leverage on social media to encourage online participation of digital fringe activities throughout the fundraising campaign. Take for example a digital fundraiser for children with cancer - Make The Change executed and sustained a 3-month long digital fundraising campaign with 4 different online activities to get our audience to interact with us on social media. We shared their generated content with hashtags. For instance, one challenge involved participants doing wall squats and only moving their eyes, to understand what it is like for children with cancer going through an MRI. Sharing these user-generated content on your own social media platforms are a good way to encourage potential donors to also take part and join the cause. A good digital agency would help you plan a stellar content calendar to also include such interactive online activities to boost your digital fundraiser. 4. Optimising Your Website After all the great content produced and tear-jerking stories shared, potential donors would be driven to your website. And you do not want it to disappoint. Your website is arguably the most important part of any digital campaign. It should be able to tell the story of what your fundraiser is about, who it is for, and have an easy to navigate page for donation. If the donation process is not straightforward, you can bet there will be more people clicking out of your website than on the donation button. It is also vital to make sure that your website is optimised for mobile, as most of your page visitors would be accessing it through their mobile phones. In fact, mobile giving has increased by 80% since 2013, and that is a trend that we expect to continue. 5. Show Appreciation To Your Donors Retaining a donor is far more valuable than acquiring a new one, and someone who has donated before is more likely to donate again to future causes if they see how their money has helped the beneficiaries. Besides sending thank you emails, you can make it more public by posting about them on social media - especially if they’ve participated in your digital activities. A visitor scrolling through your social media platforms and seeing the overwhelming response and support your digital fundraising campaign receives would only compel them to find out more, and hopefully join in as an advocate and donor. If a donor sees his/her image or name being published on your digital platforms, they would most likely also share it on theirs, spreading the word of your campaign to even wider audiences. We at Make The Change are truly thankful for the hearty responses we’ve gotten from strangers-turned-donors online that have supported our latest digital fundraiser with our client from the Children’s Cancer Foundation. MTC CAN HELP YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE As a social enterprise dedicated to helping NGOs and SMEs scale greater heights through their projects, we know how important it is to keep fundraising going despite the unfortunate pandemic. Turning your fundraising plans digital will not be a Plan B, but a better Plan A as we can help plan, position and execute your fundraiser to reach as many people as possible as the possibilities on the online space is endless and we are just scratching the surface. Make The Change is also now a B Corporation (one of only 13 in Singapore) and this certification assures that all our programs meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact.
