We had two batches of students from Zhenghua Secondary School participating in the Young Changemaker Programme from 3 -14 November. Throughout their internship, these students contributed meaningfully and passionately while gaining a deeper understanding of community impact.
Their Experience
One of the most insightful activities from the first batch of Zhenghua Secondary students was a field visit to Forward Coffee at Temasek Shophouse. They experienced first-hand how a social enterprise embraces disability and normalises inclusion through hiring Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). During their visit, they learned that even PwDs can perform a broad range of tasks as effectively as everyone else, while also admiring their perseverance and creativity. Following their visit, they consolidated their key takeaways and shared their learning with their peers.

Meanwhile, the second batch of Zhenghua Secondary students took part in the Social Innovation Hackathon at Apple as part of the Media Coverage and Learning Station teams. They contributed by documenting participants' learning experiences and assisting facilitators in guiding the students through hands-on video production activities.
Reflections
“I learnt how to use new software, how to think of creative solutions, how to network with people, how to grab the attention of your audience and many other skills.” - Iva
"This internship has also made me feel more confident to improvise and present in front of a large group of people. In the end, I am very grateful that I was given this opportunity to come down to learn about the different skills while using them to help others." - Jia Yin
“This internship made me more aware of my surroundings as to whether it’s more inclusive to the PwDs.”- Liqing
“ This internship helped me to get out of my comfort zone and socialise and work with people from different age groups and schools/places whom I do not know, which helped me to communicate a lot better.”- Yynn Huih
“ This internship was highly focused on the value of empathy, which taught me to truly empathise with people of all walks of life and brainstorm solutions for the underprivileged.” - Kayla
"MTC encourages us to zoom in on a disability and research about it, which I thought was nice as we were able to learn more about it, learn how to act when interacting with them and learn about their employment problems.” - Candice
We would like to express our gratitude to the students from Zhenghua Secondary for taking their time and effort to contribute to MTC, through the display of compassion and creativity. We believe they will continue to apply what they have learnt in back in school, their communities and beyond!
